Travel and Transportation Information

At Flandreau Indian School, we are committed to ensuring the safety and convenience of all students during their travels, whether by bus or airplane. Below are the key details regarding our transportation policies.

School Bus Transportation Rules

All school bus transportation students must follow the behavior and safety rules outlined below. Any violation of these rules may result in the loss of bus privileges.

  • Prohibited Behaviors: Use of tobacco, drugs, alcohol, and profane language is strictly always prohibited.
  • Safety Protocols:
    • Students must always keep their hands and heads inside the bus.
    • Once seated, students are not allowed to move unless directed by the driver.
    • Throwing objects out of the bus is strictly forbidden.
  • Food and Drinks: Snacks and soft drinks are allowed, but all trash must be properly disposed of. (Glass containers are not permitted.)
  • Backpacks and Belongings: Keep all personal items, such as backpacks and coats, out of the aisles.
  • Respectful Behavior: Students should be courteous to other passengers, the driver and any chaperones. Horseplay, loud talking and unnecessary distractions that could affect the driver are prohibited.
  • Emergency Protocols: In a road emergency, students should remain seated unless instructed otherwise by the driver.

These rules are essential for the safety and well-being of all students and will be strictly enforced.

Airplane Travel Policy

For students traveling by airplane, Flandreau Indian School staff will ensure that they are safely on board before leaving the airport. A staff member will accompany the student to the airport until the plane has taken off. This policy allows us to confirm that the student is en route and reassure parents and guardians of their departure.

Travel Costs

Flandreau Indian School covers the cost of student travel four times per year:

  1. The beginning of the school year (to school)
  2. Christmas break (to home)
  3. Christmas break (return to school)
  4. End of the school year (to home)

Other travel needs outside of these times may be made with exceptions.

If you have any questions about transportation, please contact the main office for more information at 605-997-3773.
